May 27, 2025

HURFOM: On May 25th, 2025, a 13-year-old child from Thiri Mingalar Ward, Kan Bauk village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division had stepped on a landmine and lost one of his legs.

The child stepped on a landmine at 2 pm while he and his grandfather were searching for seasonal mushrooms around the mountain at the west of the 273rd Light Infantry Battalion.

The child was making a living by picking up and selling season vegetables and fruits. He also sold brooms. We’re very upset with what happened to him,” said a Kan Bauk villager.

Currently, the child has been receiving medical treatment at the Dawei General Hospital.

Since the Ye Kan Taung battle in December, 2024, the 273rd LIB had blocked some village roads and issued a verbal order to the villagers not to be active around their battalion.

We have a fear of making livelihood around our village,” said a local woman.

Since 2024, landmine explosion has taken place three times in Kan Bauk area and four residents were injured.

In 2025, there were nine landmine explosions in the HURFOM’s project areas in Mon, Karen and Tenasserim Regions. The 17 residents were injured by the explosions while three of them were killed by the explosion.
