Junta’s forces extort drug abusers instead of sending them to court

HURFOM: In Ye Township, Mon State, junta’s soldiers and police members have been working together to arrest drug abusers, however they have not sent them to court. Instead, they are extorting family members of those they arrest.

On March 5th, 2025, the joint forces arrested eight drug abusers in a village in Ye Township. Then, they contacted their family members demanding 3.5 million MMK per person for their release.

They were arrested outside the village. One of them was 50 years old. The junta’s forces contacted his family members and demanded 3.5 million MMK for his release. They threatened the family that if they failed to pay the money, they would send him to wherever they wanted,” said a local villager.

Families agreed to pay 3.5 million MMK for each release, and all of those arrested were released on March 6th.

In February, 2025, the junta also arrested a villager who abused drugs and extorted five million MMK from his release.

Now, there is no rule of law and the junta just demands money and releases drug abusers. Then, they arrest them again. The junta uses this method to make money,” said a resident.
