Local man from Dawei East Forest area steps on landmine, loses leg

HURFOM: On January 22nd, 2025, 50-year-old U Win Aung from Wa Gone village, Dawei East Forest Area, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division had stepped on a landmine while going to his plantation located at the base of “Myauk Lu” Mount. He lost his left leg below the knee and sustained injuries to his chest.
“He went to his plantation on foot. His left lower leg was totally destroyed. He also had a serious injury to his right arm. He was sent to the Dawei Hospital on the same day,” said a local man.
The area where the landmine explosion happened is where the Karen National Liberation Army and the Kaw Thu Lay Army have had frequent battles. The two groups engaged in a heavy battle in December, 2024.
“We used that lane freely and safely before. Now, we dare not go to our plantation or use small lanes. We’re afraid of another explosion,” said a local source.
The Karen armed groups and the People’s Defense Force are active in Dawei East Forest Area and the military junta frequently launches operations in the area.
