Students face difficult to take final exams as schools closed by armed conflict

January 16, 2025

HURFOM: In 2024-25 academic year, Grade 4, 6, 7 and 8 have to take their final exams from February 20 to 25, 2025 while Grade 5 and 9 will take final exam from March 3 to 8, 2025. Grade 10 and 11 will take final exam from February 20 to 27, 2025.

However, since January 9, 2025, there have been heavy armed conflicts for five consecutive days in Kyone Long (old) village, Ye Township, Mon State and schools have to stop operation limitlessly due to the insecurity.

Two government schools and three Mon national schools from Kyone Long, Kyauk Me Chaung, Well Baung and Well Zin villages have to be closed due to armed conflict and military tension.

School closure has barred nearly 600 students from taking their final exam.

It’ll take long time to open school again. The conflict can’t ease easily. Even schoolteachers have to run away. It’s impossible to take exam this year,” said a local villager.

The junta has targeted Kyone Long and nearby villages with both artillery and air assaults forcing nearly 1,000 residents to flee home and take shelter in a liberated area controlled by the New Mon State Party.

The Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) have visited the temporary displaced camps and collected the list of students in the camps.

The MNEC documented how many students are in the displaced camp but we don’t know what is their plan for the displaced students,” said a resident.
