Two siblings sustain severe injuries from landmine explosion in Thanbyuzayat

HURFOM: On December 8th, 2024, two siblings sustained severe injuries from a landmine explosion that took place near Ka Line Ba Daw village, Sa Khan Gyi village tract, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.
According to local sources and family members, 25-year-old Ma War War Htwe and her 16-year-old sister Ma Mon Hnin Htwe were collecting firewood at a rubber plantation when they stepped on a landmine.
Ma War War Htwe sustained injuries to both legs and her right arm and Ma Mon Hnin Htwe has injuries to her eyes and neck.
“They were collecting firewood for four days at the plantation where they stepped on a landmine. The elder sister was brought out by a motorbike while the younger sister was carried off by a stretcher,” said their mother.
The two siblings were admitted to the Thanbyuzayat General Hospital with the assistance of the local rescue team but transferred to the Mawlamyine General Hospital later due to the severity of their injuries.
“Mon Hnin Htwe had to have one of her eyes removed,” continued her mother.
The two siblings are from Pan Ta Naw, Irrawaddy Division. The family moved to Ka Line Ba Daw village. They make their livelihood by collecting firewood and removing bushes in rubber plantations.
On December 5th, 2024, 43-year-old Ma Aye Mon from Kyone Ka Rote village, Thanbyuzayat Township sustained injuries to her whole body from a landmine at a rubber plantation near Ye Ta Gon village. She is still receiving treatment at the Thanbyuzayat General Hospital.
