Mawrawaddy Navy Command arrests and extorts Phaung Taw villager

HURFOM: On November 20th, 2024, the Mawrawaddy Navy Command arrested 35-year-old Ko Aung Htwe from Phuang Taw village, Thel Chaung village tract, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division after accusing him of having connections with the People’s Defense Force.
Navy command claimed Ko Aung Htwe had a conversation with a member of the PDF on his way to buy “things” in Kan Bauk. His family was told they had to pay five million MMK for his release.
“They phoned his home and said to bring five million MMK on November 22nd. They continued that only with the payment would they release him,” said a local villager.
The family paid the extortion money and Ko Aung Htwe was released.
This year, the Mawrawaddy Navy Command arrested nearly 30 Kan Bauk residents. A Zar D villager has been detained in the Dawei Prison and has a court hearing in prison.
