Plantation owners in armed conflict zone halt work

HURFOM: In 2024, rubber garnered a good price in Mon State but most rubber plantation owners in armed conflict zones have had to halt their harvesting due to security concerns.
The Ye-Thanbyuzayat Road part of the 8th Union Highway Road is currently controlled by the joint resistance forces and the military junta has launched military operations in order to regain control alongside the road.
As a result, there has been military tensions in Well Kha Mi, Sa Khan Gyi, Yaw Thar Aye, Aye Kabar, Maw Ka Nin, Pha Yar Gone, Ka Nin Ka Maw and Hnit Ka Yin villages since July, 2024.
The junta targeted the villages with indiscriminate artillery attacks and military operations in the area. The junta also placed landmines in an attempt to protect their military bases from resistance forces.
“As there have been frequent landmine explosions, we dare not go to our plantation. Moreover, the Thanbyuzayat Highway Road has become an armed conflict zone. Our Northern Ye is the worst. This year, the military routinely launched artillery attacks,” said a local villager.
This month, the military junta announced they would launch a military operation from R Yu Taung to Hnit Ka Yin villages in Northern Ye Township. Junta-appointed village Administrators have urged migrant workers to apply for their identity documents, known as a recommendation of identity.
“When encountering the military regiment, if you can’t show a concrete recommendation of your identity, you’ll be in trouble. So, I’ve urged the villagers to apply for the recommendation papers,” said a village Administrator.
In 2023, the military junta routinely launched artillery attacks at the check-point of the People’s Defense Force between Well Kha Mi and Out Hngat Pyaw Taw villages forcing the rubber plantation owners and workers in Well Ka Mi and neighboring villages to flee.
“The Well Ka Lee artillery regiment has frequently launched artillery attacks targeting the check-point. There have been no casualties but the artillery shells have dropped and exploded in the rubber plantations,” said a plantation owner from Well Kha Mi village.
Similarly, there have been frequent armed clashes between the military junta and the local resistance forces in Kyarinnseikyi-Three Pagoda Pass Road in Karen State and rubber plantation owners in the area have to abandon their operations.
“The junta frequently launched artillery attacks alongside the road. The PDF has also launched drone attacks. So it’s difficult for us to go to the plantation,” said a plantation worker.
The military junta issued a curfew in the armed conflict zone banning people from going outside from 8 pm to 5 am and this restriction negatively impacts rubber plantation owners and workers.
