Private company to distribute electricity in junta’s full-controlled Chaung Zone Township

HURFOM: After the attempted coup in February 1st, 2024, the military junta has to limit the time for distribution of electricity across the country and the Mon State has been receiving electricity only six hours a day.

The limitation of electricity is getting worse in Mon State this year and the Mon State government has decided to grant a permission of electricity distribution in Chaung Zone Township to a private company in order to distribute electricity 24 hours in the township.

The State can’t distribute electricity regularly. Now, we’ve heard that a private company was granted a permission to distribute electricity. In late September, the company’s staff has substituted the old electric cables with the new ones,” said a villager from Chaung Zone Township.

According to local villagers, even the private company will distribute electricity 24 hours a day, the electric bill must be as high as that in Ye Township. In Ye Township, the private company has been collecting even 2,200 MMK per 1kWh due to scarcity and high price of gasoline.

Even just normal cooking costs at least 50,000 MMK per month in Ye Township. We’ll get 24-hour electricity but we have to pay more than 100,000 MMK for electric bill. If so, I have to reconsider about receiving electricity from the private company,” said a local man.

In August, 2024, the Ministry of Electricity controlled by the junta has doubled the electricity bill but still failed to distribute 24-hour electricity.
