Junta’s indiscriminate artillery attacks force residents of “Gyaing River” to flee homes

HURFOM: Since September 29th, 2024, the junta’s 81st Light Infantry Battalion based in Zar-Tha-Byin has been targeting Dhammasa, Tar Ra Nar, Kaw Bane and other villages in the “Gyaing River” area, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State with indiscriminate artillery attacks.
As a result, local residents fled from their homes.
The junta has launched artillery attacks to interrupt the movement of the resistance forces in the area. Junta’s troops have stationed themselves in the villages and have also launched indiscriminate attacks outside the villages, according to a Dhammasa resident.
On September 30th, 2024, a local woman was injured and some houses in Min Yaw village were damaged due to the junta’s artillery attack.
“During these days, we continuously hear the sound of both heavy and small weapons. Elderly persons and children are frightened when hearing the sound of gunfire. We worry about a possible armed clash. The troops have stationed themselves in the village and they’ve limited our movements. They’re always checking us,” said a local woman from Ta Ra Nar village.
At about 8 pm on October 3rd, 2024, the junta launched an indiscriminate artillery attack again forcing local residents to flee their homes that night.
“There were continuous artillery attacks at night and some villagers immediately ran away the same night. Some fled the next morning,” said a local source.
Currently, the military junta and its government staff are conducting a national census in Kaw Ban village, and villagers believe the junta’s artillery attacks are intended to prevent resistance forces from interrupting their project.
