HURFOM: Since August 19th, 2024, there has been an intense battle between the military junta and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army near Ah Nan Kwin village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State.

The junta bombarded the village with artillery and air assaults, burning more than 500 houses and forcing thousands of residents to flee.

There was another air assault on August 25th. Nearly the entire Ah Nan Kwin village was burnt down and destroyed. There have been continuous artillery attacks. The battle is still intense,” said a displaced villager from Ah Nan Kwin village.

The junta’s attack forced more than 4,000 residents from Ah Nan Kwin, Lot Shan, Ta Nyin, Kyauk Ba Lue, Than Pa Yar, Phar Yar, Pan Aung, Pu Taw, Yat Phaw, Ka Ka Thit, Kun Na War, Win Khana, Phar Pya, Kyat Chan, Kha Lel Saw and nearby villages to flee their homes.

As we have to flee home in the rainy season, we have problems finding food and shelter. Some villagers are taking shelter at their relatives’ houses in Thanbyuzayat,” said a displaced woman.

Some displaced villagers fled to Thanbyuzayat and Mawlamyine while some of them are hiding and taking shelter at nearby villages, and in the mountains and forest.

Schools in nearby villages have closed due to the ongoing intense battle and traveling on Thanbyuzayat-Three Pagoda Pass Highway Road after 6 pm has also been prohibited.
