Junta pursues and arrests young men claiming compulsory military service

August 13, 2024

HRUFOM: Since the first week of August, 2024, the military junta has been arresting young men in Kyike Hto Township, Mon State claiming they are on the compulsory military service list.  As a result of the junta’s pursuit for conscripts, many young men have fled from their homes.

The junta is arresting young men saying they are selected by ballot for compulsory military service. There are four young men in our ward who are on their list. They came to arrest and capture them but they had already run away,” said a Kyike Hto resident.

Many young men from six wards in Kyike Hto Town and nearby villages fled to liberated areas controlled by the Thaton District Karen National Union, and some have fled to Thailand.

There are no young men in the ward at the moment. Some ran to the KNU area and some fled to Thailand. Some went to the open sea (for fishing) and have never come back,” said another Kyike Hto resident.

The military junta has sent young candidates who have just finished their military training to the front line and the conflict zones so that no young man wants to join the compulsory military service.

At the moment, according to the data collected by the HURFOM, the Mawlamyine based Southeast Military Command has detained more than 100 young men and they will soon join the 4th batch for the compulsory military service.
