Junta’s EPC extorts huge sums from Mawlamyine residents for dubious electricity bills

HURFOM: Since February 1, 2021, Mawlamyine residents’ access to electricity has been limited to three to six hours a day. Since July, 2024, the Electricity Providing Committee (EPC) of the military junta is claiming that residents have to pay overdue electricity bills, amounting to tens of thousands of MMK.
The junta’s EPC accused residents of miscalculating electricity bills claiming they must pay overdue fines. This action is tantamount to extortion of between 200,000 MMK to a million MMK per house.
“We have to pay the electricity bill every month. But we still have an overdue bill. Did the officials read the meters carefully? But the overdue bill isn’t a small amount. It’s ten thousand MMK,” said one Mawlamyine resident.
The EPC has been checking the meter boxes and have removed boxes from houses who cannot afford the overdue fines.
“If we can’t pay the amount they demanded, they’ll remove our meter boxes. Now, commodity prices have risen sharply and households who don’t have money have no alternative but to accept the removal of the meter boxes,” said another source.
The military junta charges 250 MMK per 1kWh (from 1 to 5,000 kWh), 400 MMK per 1kWh (from 50,000 to 20,000 kWh) and 500 MMK per 1kWh (for 20,000 kWh and above).
