Armed group shuts down monastic school in Long Lone

July 9, 2024

HURFOM: In June, 2024, a local armed group suspended a monastic school in Long Lone Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division.

Local villagers reported HURFOM that “the school had started to operate in June but local armed group ordered to close the school. The school had about 450 children. The students’ parents are feeling upset.”

Closure of the monastic school has denied the right to education of the children.

A local villager said, “they told us to go to school only after the revolution is finished but we don’t know when the revolution will be finished. As we have no money, we can’t send our children to schools in the big cities. We’ve just wasted an academic year,” said a local villager.

In May, 2024, the armed group extorted 100,000 MMK per house in the village, where they had stationed themselves.

If we refuse to pay the money, we’re afraid of something bad happening to us. Many villagers don’t like their misconduct,” said a local.
