Gasoline shortages and high prices interrupts farm work

HURFOM: After the “Kyone Ate” and “Ma Saw” bridges located along the Yangon – Mawlamyine Highway Road were blown up on May 11th, 2024, there has been a gasoline shortage. The bombing of the bridges has disrupted the supply chain and contributed to a rise in prices throughout Mon State.

A tank of diesel priced at about 200,000 MMK last year is now, priced at nearly a million MMK, and it is not easy to buy diesel.

“I have a tractor and I hope to expand my farm work this year. But we can’t buy gasoline now. All gasoline shops are closed. There are some places where you can buy gasoline but it’s too expensive and you can’t buy as much as you want,” said a farmer from Ye Township.

The shortage and high price of gasoline has increased the cost of production, continued the farmer.

“This year, the production cost will increase two or three times,” said the farmer.

There is rain in Ye Township now and the paddle fields are filled with rain water. It is a good time to plough farmland but farmers are unable to start their work due to lack of gasoline.

“This is the best time to plough farmland. But we can do nothing without gasoline. We can only start our work when we get gasoline,” said another farmer.

Due to the transportation problem, not only gasoline but also other goods and items are now in short supply in Mon State.
