HURFOM: There are reports that 100 young men from Mon State must be identified for compulsory military service. On March 17th, the village Administrator delivered letters summoning men in the 18 to 35 age range to a gathering titled, ‘meet and discuss.’
“The letters were delivered on March 16 in Mu Don. A villager from each ward must be present at “Rajadirit” Hall on March 17. The village no longer has many young people left in their community. Most of them already went abroad,” said a Mu Don resident.
The letters have only been delivered only in Mu Don village in Chaung Zone Township at this point.
“A letter hasn’t been delivered yet in our village. But it’ll arrive sooner or later. We’ve also heard that the Administrator will collect 50,000 MMK per house but we don’t know the reason. There are rumors that if we refuse their summons, we have to pay a monetary fine,” said a resident from Ka Log village, Chaung Zone Township.
After invitation letters were delivered in Mu Don village, rumors of “refusing military service will result in a monetary fine” are spreading widely in villages throughout Chaungzon Township.
There have been many reports that junta-appointed Administrators are extorting a huge amount of money from the residents after threatening them with compulsory conscription law across Mon State but HURFOM are unable to confirm the source of this allegation.
