Junta bans transport of gasoline in Long Lone creating livelihood and transportation hardships

March 13, 2024

HURFOM: Beginning on March 3rd, 2024, the military junta imposed a ban on transportation of gasoline in Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division.

A military check-point located at the Dawei – Ka Myaw Kin Bridge was not allowing the transportation of gasoline, which created fuel shortages in Long Lone City and nearby villages. Subsequently, the price of gasoline has sharply risen.

We’ve run out of gasoline at the moment. The gasoline boxer truck will arrive in the evening. But the Ka Myaw Kin Check-point hasn’t allowed transportation. Even moving gasoline with a five-gallon bucket is not allowed,” said a manager from a gas station in Dawei.

At the moment, 1 liter of gasoline is priced at 2,700 MMK in Dawei but Long Lone residents have to pay from 3,800 to 4,600 MMK to get the same amount of gasoline. Additionally, a single motorbike can buy only one liter of gasoline.

If you pay money at the check-point, you can transport five gallons of gasoline in a bucket. But you can’t do that publicly,” said a driver of Long Lone – Dawei way.

Residents rely on motorcycles and tricycles for transportation and work. The shortage and high price of gasoline is creating significant livelihood and transportation hardships for those living in the region.
