Two villagers arrested ten days ago still not released

HURFOM: On August 13th, 2024, 50-year-old U Thein Myint Lwin, aka Ko Su Kan and 25-year-old Ko Zayar Oo from Phaung Taw village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division were arrested by troops from the Mawrawaddy Navy Command, at their home, at night.
The pair were arrested ten days ago, but they have not been released yet, according to a Phaung Taw resident.

HURFOM: At about 9am on August 21st, 2024, the military junta raided the house of freelance reporter Ko Htet Myat Thu near the “Bell Lay” Restaurant in Lat Pya village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State. The junta used an excessive number of troops during the raid.
Ko Htet Myat Thu, Citizen Journalist of DVB News Agency Ko Win Htut Oo and two members of the Kyikehto Revolutionary Forces (KRF) were killed during the incident. Ko Htet Myat Thu’s grandmother who suffers from a stroke also sustained an injury.

HURFOM: On August 19th, 2024, the military junta launched artillery and air assaults on Ah Nan Kwin village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State. 32 houses were destroyed and more than 2,300 residents were forced to flee due to the attacks.
The military junta battled against the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army near Ah Nan Kwin village on August 15th.

HURFOM: On June 19th, 2024, a battle between the military junta and the local resistance forces in Dawei. The junta launched air assaults and then burnt down more than 60 houses in areas under the control of the Dawei District New Mon State Party.
According to the data collected by HURFOM, four residents, including a child, were killed while thousands of villagers had to flee their home during the armed clashes in Yebyu Township in June, 2024.
In addition, 40 houses in Myauk Chaw village and four houses in Nagar Eye village were destroyed. Then, the junta’s troops burnt down 12 houses in Zar Teak village, Yebyu Township and at least four houses in Maung Mell Shaung village.

HURFOM: The Ye Electricity Providing Committee recently announced that beginning in September, 2024, electricity bills will be calculated at the rate of 2,200 MMK per 1kWh.
However, local residents received bills calculated at the new rate in August, 2024. Residents told HURFOM that the increase is making life much more difficult.

HURFOM: On August 18th, 2024, a junta’s regiment stationed at the Pa La Police Station, Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division launched a discriminate artillery attack even though there had been no armed clashes in the area. Locals reported to HURFOM that the artillery attack killed a child.
The artillery shells dropped and exploded at Tan Shin village, Toe Shay village tract and the debris from the explosion killed a six-year-old child.

HURFOM: On August 15th and 16th, 2024, armed clashes took place between the military junta and the local resistance forces near the new village established by Nai Khway and Daw Yane. The fighting took place beside the Thanbyuzayat-Three Pagoda Pass Highway Road, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.
The 315th artillery battalion based in Well Ka Lee launched numerous artillery attacks and one shell hit a hut in the rubber plantation.

HURFOM: Since May, 2024, some village or ward Administrators in Chaung Zone Township, Mon State have been imposing a monthly extortion fee on villagers claiming they must support conscripts for compulsory military service. The Administrators claim this is a direct order from the Director of Chaung Zone Township General Administration Department, U Zaw Win Nine Win.
“He said it’s a direct order from the Director and forced us to make a compulsory contribution. Each household started to pay 10,000 MMK three months ago,” said a Chaung Zone resident.

The attack killed a newborn infant and injured five other residents, according to the central Karen National Union.
