On September 14, 2023, there was intense fighting between the joint forces of the military junta and the Border Guard Force (BGF) and the Karen National Liberation Army fighting alongside the People’s Defense Force.
More than 10,000 villagers from Pha Ya Ngar Zu, Kha Lell Yaw Lay, Noung Dae, Kha Lell Yaw Gyi, Pu Lane and Dagon Tie villages in the Kha Lell – Dagon Tie area had to flee from their home and at least 20 schools were closed..
“Food and medicine are urgently needed. The junta has been continuously reinforcing their troops increasing local tensions. If villagers have to flee from their home for many days, there will be grave difficulty,” said a villager.
Due to heavy rains, internally displaced persons (IDP) have struggled to find a safe place. There is insufficient shelter and there is no special separate or safe zone for IDPs. Their need for food, clothes, medicine and safe shelter is great.
The military junta has launched both artillery attack and air assaults, destroying houses and schools.
Burmese soldiers have looted personal valuables, generators and solar panels from the now vacated homes.
