August 23, 2023

HURFOM: There is tension in Kyike Hto Township, Mon State.

The military junta recently launched an operation targeting the township, resulting in residents from four villages having to flee from their homes at night.

At about 9 pm on August 16, 2023, a military unit with more than 100 troops attacked both Zee Gone and Kyike Hto villages with artillery and small weapons,  and then invaded the villages.

Residents from Zee Gone and surrounding villages including Pa Doug Taw, Chan Myae and Ka Ra Way Sake fled and hid in nearby plantations or the forest.

The artillery shells dropped and exploded at night and we all had to run away. We had no time to pick up anything. The rain worsened our situation. Some villagers haven’t returned yet,” said a Zee Gone resident.

More than 1,000 residents from four villages fled from their homes. Only on August 18th, did some start to return to their homes. However, most fear another military invasion and are still hidden in the forest.
