Enamel Paint Campaign Begins
April 18, 2008
HURFOM : On the 15th of April, 2008, the second day of the water festival, local villagers from Mon State reported seeing graffiti painted on roads in opposition to the government’s constitution. Using red enamel paint, the graffiti artist had written words in the main road and at other junctions of smaller roads in Moulmein, Thanbyuzayat and Kyait-Kha-Mi Townships.
A Kyone-Ka-Dat villager said that the words ‘SPDC’s constitution (X) cross’ was written with red enamel paint across signboards, walls and on trees. “On the second day of the water festival we saw the bright red graffiti painted across an old signboard at the edge of the village. The village headmen and some militias came and removed the board after a few hours, after realizing they couldn’t erase the enamel paint. We saw it in the morning, and no-one was sure who would have written it,” he added.
A HURFOM reporter also stated observing these same slogans in many other locations, including the edge of Kamawet and Thanbyuzayat, and at bus stops in Moulmein, Naing Hlown, Set Twe, Taw Kuu, Tha Kon Tain villages. Authorities have been investigating and destroying the graffiti as soon as they discover it. They have also instructed members of the Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC) and militia to closely monitor their villages.
