Military junta launches daily artillery attacks on villages in Bee Lin and Thaton

HURFOM: Since January 2023, even though there has been no armed clashes, the military junta has been launching artillery attacks on a daily basis, targeting villages in Bee Lin and Thaton Township.   These communities are under the  control of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the Karen National Union (KNU).

In March, 2023, at least ten innocent villagers were killed,  while another 20 were injured by these artillery attacks.

On April 2, 2023, three villagers from Chaung Sout village, in Thaton Township were injured by the junta’s artillery attacks.

The junta are launching artillery attacks randomly. Our houses were destroyed. On April 2nd , a 66-year-old resident from Win Phone village was hit by an artillery weapon when harvesting paddy rice. Three villagers were injured in total. They all were sent to Thaton District General Hospital,” said a villager.

According to the local reports, multiple  Light Infantry and Artillery  Battalions based in Bee Lin and Thaton Townships launched attacks on villages and killed innocent villagers.

Burmese soldiers also threaten travelers and seize their belongings.

In the last week of March, soldiers from the 8th Light Infantry Battalion shot two 18-year-old men and seized their belongings. In addition, all the belongings of a couple travelers were stolen by the Burmese soldiers,” said a resident from Thaton Township.

Since the coup of February 2021, and the ensuing military tensions, more than 130,000 villagers from Thaton District have been forced to flee their homes.  The District falls under the control of 1rst Brigade of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA).
