Junta pressures owners to transform their motorbike into tricycles

March 20, 2023

HURFOM: After three members of the village Administration team including the Administrator, U Kin Soe were killed on January 25, 2023, the military junta banned riding motorbikes in Kan Bauk village track, Yebyu Township, in Tenasserim Division.

The junta had allowed riding motorbikes for carrying things but there must be no more than two big baskets at the rear of the bikes. However, on March 7, the junta issued an order that all motorbikes must now be transformed into tricycles.  If not, owners will be punished.

Transforming a motorbike into tricycle will cost from 300,000 to 500,000 Kyat and most owners cannot afford the cost, a local woman told HURFOM.

We’ve had lots of troubles. Before, we can ride motorbike with two baskets at the rear. But now we must transform our motorbike into tricycle. We must spend at least 300,000 or 400,000 Kyat. We’ve already had a tough livelihood, and this will be an additional cost. It’s not okay, said a local woman.

When transforming motorbikes  into tricycles, the passenger seat must be at the right side of the rider, ordered the junta.

We must do what they order. If not, we are the ones who must suffer. The junta has issued more and more orders and every order those put us in trouble. We have a tough life, said a villager from Kan Bauk area.

The junta has also completely banned riding motorbikes in the Kan Bauk area, however, soldiers, members of  police forces and members of the pro-military group “Pyu Saw Htee” are free to ride their motorbikes in the area.
