Ma Hwelve Mount CheckPoint demands letters for the transportation of rice

HURFOM: Burmese soldiers continue to occupy and interrogate passengers attempting to cross at the Ma Hwelve Mount CheckPoint which is located on the border of the Mon State and Tenasserim Division.
Persons passing through this gate must present a recommendation letter signed by their village Administrator.
“We typically transport rice. On February 20, I was carrying three bags of rice in my car. We were stopped by Burmese soldiers at the gate and they seized the rice after an interrogation. They said they would give us back the rice bags, but only after I brought back a recommendation letter from the Administrator indicating I am transporting rice,” said a local car driver.
Drivers transport rice every day, and the military is demanding drivers provide a letter for every trip. Some Administrators refuse to provide recommendation letters every day.
Villagers say these restrictions interrupt the flow of goods and create food problems for the local people.
