Pu Law IDP Camp faces food supply shortage
July 11, 2022
HURFOM: Since late June 2022, there have been frequent armed clashes between the Burmese military and the alliances of Pu Law People’s Defense Forces.
These skirmishes have taken place in Pu Law Township, Myike District, Tenasserim Division, which has disrupted the food supply transportation system. Recently the Burmese military cut off the transportation corridor leaving the Pu Law Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp with a shortage of food.
“If there are more armed clashes over the next ten days, the camp will run out of food,” said the official from the IDP camp.
At the end of June there were 1, 166 IDPs in the camp, but by the first week of July another 800 IDPs were added, raising the camp population to just under 2000 persons.
According to local sources, the Burmese military has been intimidating grocery store owners to close their stores, and has also been arresting people living in the IDP camp.
As the number of armed clashes in the area increases, locals from Lel Thit, Nan Taung, Pu Law Gone, Kyaung Nane, Hmaw Mi, Pane Nae Taung and Durian Pin villages have fled and taken shelter at the Pu Law IDP camp.
Since the February 2021 military led coup, Burma now has more than one million IDPs, according to the report of the ISP Myanmar.
