Kyarinnseikyi residents consider relocation due to armed clashes

HURFOM: The possibility of armed clashes in Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State is causing Mon residents to consider leaving their homes and moving to Mudon Township in Mon State.
The area is controlled by the Karen and Mon Ethnic Armed Organization.
“Currently, people from the East Mount (in Kyarinnseikyi Township) are worried about armed clashes and have tried buying land plots in Mudon. The price of the land plot doesn’t drop but there are lots of buyers,” said a villager from Phae Do village, Mudon Township, Mon State.
Since April, 2021, there have been armed clashes between the KNU Brigade #5 based in Pha Pon Township, Karen State and the Burmese army. Villagers are worried the violence may lead to more civil war.
“Kyarinnseikyi is the area where the Mon and Karen armed groups are active. So it’s very possible that there will be armed clashes very soon. That’s why the residents are searching for land plots in Mudon,” said a plantation owner from Kyarinnseikyi.
Kyarinnseikyi Township is mostly inhabited by the Mon and Karen people, with smaller numbers of Burmese and other ethnic minorities. Most residents make their livelihood on rubber plantations.
A long history of armed clashes between the Burmese army and EAOs, has led to tens of thousands of internally displaced people from Kachin and Karen States in need of humanitarian aid and health assistance.
