Junta’s troops beat young men during their interrogation

HURFOM: In the second week of September 2024, an excessive number of military junta troops invaded and stationed themselves in villages in Ye Township, Mon State. These troops have been stopping and forcing residents to show their ID cards, and mobile phones and are opening motorbike’s tool boxes. In some cases, the junta’s troops have beaten young male pedestrians.

About 30 troops stationed at the Lamine – Thaung Pyin Road beat two 15/16-year-old teenagers with their rifle butts while interrogating them, according to a source close to the victims.

The soldiers at the Lamine-Thaung Pyin Road targeted the youth. I’m not sure if the young men couldn’t speak Burmese fluently or they didn’t understand what the soldiers said, the soldiers beat them with the rifle butts. In some cases, the soldiers forced the villagers to open their motorbikes’ tool boxes and they seized phones and money in the boxes,” said a local source.

Troops are stationed at entrances and exits of the villages and on the roads between two villages. They have tightened security and impose a rigorous check on local pedestrians.

They’ve stationed themselves at roads between two villages and the entrances and the exits of the villages. Then, they interrogated everyone they met. They forced them to show their ID card. We just went around our village so no one brought their ID cards. It has no problem for the adults but it’s a worrying issue for the young men as they are being targeted,” said a Lamine resident.

On September 16th, hundreds of troops from the 106th light infantry battalion based in Maw Ka Nin entered Kaw Dut village. Villagers now worry about the potential for an armed clash.

Hundreds of soldiers entered the village. They came by military trucks previously but on foot this time. Villagers are frightened by the possibility of an armed clash. We hear the sound of heavy weapons both day and night. The military aircrafts are flying both day and night also. The situation is insecure,” said another Lamine resident.

The military check-points alongside the Mawlamyine-Thanbyuzayat Highway Road have also tightened their security and are strictly checking all passengers. Those who do not hold a Mon State ID card are extorted from 5,000 to 10,000 MMK.
