Junta arrests ten men from boatyard in Kaw Thaung

HURFOM: On September 1, 2024, the military junta has raided boatyards in Shwe Pyi Thar and Aye Yeik Nyein Wards, Kaw Thaung Town, Tenasserim Division and arrested ten middle-aged men.
“The military arrested ten middle-aged men who were working at boatyard in Shwe Pyi Thar. The son of a boatyard owner is also among the arrested. In this morning, they’ve tried to pay money for his release but the military denied the request,” said a local source.
The arrested men have been detained at the 262nd light infantry battalion based in Chauk Mile village, Kaw Thaung Township.
“The military hasn’t detained them at the police station. They’re arrested for being forced to be candidates for compulsory military service. In Kaw Thaung, at least 200 candidates were sent to the military training for each batch. Now, the junta has been conducting arrest in the downtown of Kaw Thaung for three days already,” said a Kaw Thaung resident.
Those who are working at the boatyards are mostly from Myeik, Dawei, Pu Law and Tenasserim Township and they are staying in the barracks at the boatyards.
On July 30, 2024, Thai authority had sent back 150 Burmese citizens and the military junta had selectively arrested 26 young men at Kaw Thaung Seaport. Then, the young men have been sent and detained at the 262nd light infantry battalion.
