Mon schoolteachers face livelihood hardship: Basic salary not cover daily expenses
July 23, 2024
HURFOM: The basic salary of schoolteachers under the Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) was 95,000 MMK. In June, 2024, the salary increased to 150,000 MMK.
However, commodity prices are now so high that even the increased salary is insufficient to cover daily expenses leaving school teachers with livelihood challenges.
“We’re happy as our salary has increased but even that salary can’t cover our daily expenses. It’s a bit okay for single people like me but married people are struggling a lot,” said a primary school teacher.
Most Mon school teachers stay in their workplace just for two or three years and then, they have to change their occupation or go abroad for work, due to salary deficit.
Mon schools are facing a shortage of schoolteachers, and the MNEC has to train students who just passed their matriculation exam to become school teachers.
“I have to teach two classes at the same time so I can’t give full attention to my students. When teaching in this class, I must also give exercises to students in other classes,” said a schoolteacher.
There are 148 basic education schools and 814 schoolteachers working under the MNEC.
