Female political prisoners beaten after being transferred to new prison

HURFOM: On June 15th, 2024, political prisoners from Kyikemayaw Central Prison, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State were transferred to Dike Oo Prison in Pegu Division. The prisoners were beaten once relocated to the new prison and they have been banned from having contact with their family members.

The junta has accused more than 80 female prisoners of having illegal medicine, illicit drugs and mobile phones in the prison. The women were beaten with rubber and wooden sticks. The prisoners were also subjected to slingshots. At least five female political prisoners have sustained serious injury and more than 30 prisoners have been detained under solitary confinement.

Before, only male prisoners were treated like that. Now, even female prisoners are being beaten. They locked them in a room and beat them with various kinds of sticks. They shot at them with slingshots. At least five prisoners sustained serious injuries. Many are under solitary confinement,” said a source close to the matter.

The prison authority has not informed family members about the prison transfer and have blocked prisoners from having contact with their family members since the transfer.

They must inform family members about the transfer. But they didn’t. They’ve violated human rights at the highest level,” said a source close to female political prisoners.

The junta has brutally violated human rights in prisons since the attempted coup including sexual assaults.

There are more than 5,000 female political prisoners in prisons across Burma.
