Two young boys arrested and extorted by police forces in Mottama

On May 6th, 2024, two young boys from Kwel Chan village, Mottama Town, Paung Township, Mon State were arrested by local police, and then security forces threatened them to pay a ransom for their release.

Maung Chit Lin Zaw and Maung Chit Lin Aung, both 16 years old, left Mottama for Kwel Chan by motorbike. Police chased and arrested them.

The police said they were arrested as two men rode a motorbike. The police threatened that if they didn’t pay one million MMK, they would be brought to court. Their families made a big apology to the police and then, the case was resolved with 200,000 MMK,” said a source close to the victims’ families.

The two young boys were detained at the Mottama Regional Police Station and their families had to pay 100,000 MMK each.

According to independent local media agencies, at least 50 young men have been arrested in Mon State in April, 2024.  Most had to pay varying amounts in ransom for their release.
