Administrators warning workers not to stay overnight at plantation causes problems

HURFOM: Farmers in Ye Township, Mon State grow and harvest rubber, betel nut and fruits. They are now busy preparing their plantations for the upcoming dry season.
However, Administrators have verbally warned them not to allow workers to sleep/stay overnight, which is disrupting their operations. In addition, migrant workers do not have any other accommodation, other than the workplace.
“It isn’t a big deal for the workers who live near the villages. But it isn’t okay for the migrant workers. They have many difficulties,” said one plantation owner.
If someone did not follow the warning and was arrested by the army, the Administrator will not take any responsibility for the arrest.

The Administrator declared the warning at the village monastery on the Sabbath Day.
“The Administrator said he would do nothing if those who slept outside the village or in the plantation were arrested. He continued saying he would try his best to intervene, but only if the arrest took place in the village,” said a villager.
The military junta has issued a curfew limiting people from going outside between 8 pm and 4 am in most of the villages in Ye Township and now administrators have imposed more restrictions affecting plantation workplaces. Villagers are worried the junta’s army will conduct more arrests.
