A junta’s regiment consisting of about 200 troops has been stationed in the Mawlamyine Cement Factory and at nearby plantations in Ka Don Si village, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State. The military presence has disrupted the movement and livelihood of villagers, farmers and plantation workers.

The regiment has also launched indiscriminate drone and artillery attacks targeting nearby areas. The artillery shells have dropped on plantations and farms threatening the security and safety of the local villagers.

“Now, it’s the time to tap rubber trees and if we can’t do our work, we earn nothing. We have to totally rely on the plantation. Without this work, we have to borrow money from others and that isn’t okay,” said a Ka Don Si villager.

With artillery shells dropping on residential areas, parents worry about their children’s security and safety and stop sending them to school.

“The army is in the village and we’ve heard the sound of artillery attacks very often. Some parents are worried about their children’s safety, and decided not to send them to schools,” said one parent.

The regiment has also tightened its security in the area while soldiers break into houses and shops and loot valuable items. Restaurant and grocery store owners wanted to close their businesses but the regiment forced them to remain open.
