Returnees must report to the authorities to slow COVID-19 infection rates

HURFOM: Due to the spread of COVID-19, the Kyaikmayaw township and village level General Administration Department (GAD) and Township Public Health Department are cooperating to develop a list of returnees to Myanmar from foreign countries.   The intent is to be able to conduct a medical check on these individuals. Health authorities are insisting returnees must follow a strict home quarantine for 14 days, in order to prevent the infection from spreading further and faster, throughout the country.

Commodity prices rise sharply as COVID-19 cases confirmed in Myanmar

HURFOM: Since the Ministry of Health and Sports confirmed the presence of  2 cases of COVID-19 in Myanmar, on March 23, 2020, people in Ye, Mon State have started panic buying.  The price of rice and other commodities has risen sharply. There are also shortages, and some shops are closed, according to local people.

Another villager killed in landmine blast

HURFOM: While on a hunting trip, two villagers from Yin Yel village, Ye Chaung Phyar Region, Mon State suffered from another land mine explosion. One of the two villagers stepped on the landmine and was killed on March 18 2020.

Mon State to gather data on child labour

HURFOM: On March 23, 2020, Mon State will conduct a survey to gather data on the incidence rates of child labour.

The goal of the survey research is to reduce child labour and will gather data and information on the number of children involved, improve knowledge and awareness amongst business owners and parents about the issue, as well as exploring issues of forced labour.  The project will also seek to create livelihood training opportunities that provide education and support for children.

Two landmine blasts in one day seriously maim two villagers

HURFOM: On March 10, 2020, two villagers from Ka Lae village, Yar Phu village track, Yebyu Township,  Tenasserim Division lost their legs in two separate landmine explosions.

35-year-old Maung Ah Pine was enroute to repair a damaged water pipeline between Myauk Chaw and Ka Lae villages.  On the way, he stepped on a landmine and lost his right leg.

NMSP to construct new office near old check point

HURFOM: According to New Mon State Party officials, the NMSP is planning toconstruct its new office near its old checkpoint at Zee Hna Pin, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.

We’ve already negotiated with the Mon State Security and Border Affairs Minister for a new office. But we have to negotiate with the Karen (the Karen National Union – KNU) and we also have to apply for a “Land Use Certificate” for the plantation where construction of the new office is planned. Now we’re busy applying for the certificate. After the certificate is granted, we can start the construction,” said an official of the Mawlamyine District NMSP.
