HURFOM report shows worrying trend in sexual violence against children in Mon State and Mon areas of southern Burma

Locals refuse to pay electricity fees in protest at Bedok Construction Company breaching its agreement

HURFOM: Bedok Construction and Engineering Company’s 24-hour electricity project in Northern Ye Township, Mon State began to operate on April 7^th 2018. On July 8^th, when the company came to collect the fees for residential power consumption, locals found that the fees were higher than what they had previously agreed. Furious, local villagers have protested by refusing to pay the fees.

This incident is the latest in a string of disputes between the company and villagers. In May 2018, local farmers petitioned the Mon State Parliament to force Bedok Company to remove electricity poles from their land, which the company had constructed without compensating the farmers. In June 2018, villagers reported that the company failed to properly fix village roads after the company’s trucks had destroyed them. Read more

850 Dengue Fever Cases and 3 Deaths in Mon State Since Start of Rainy Season

WCRP: In 2018, ten townships in Mon State have reported 850 cases of dengue fever during the rainy season so far, and three children have died of the illness, according to the Mon State Public Health Department.

The three children who died of dengue fever are a nine-year-old from Thanbyuzayat Township, an eight-month-old from Paung Township, and a 16-year-old from Thaton Township. Read more

16-year-old girl raped by her cousin’s brother in Ye Township

WCRP: On July 6^th 2018, a 16-year-old girl from Daminkone Kyar Tan quarter, A Sin village tract, Ye Township, Mon State, was raped by the 20-year-old brother of her cousin.

Daw Lwin Thidar, the girl’s boss, explained, “On July 6^th, while the victim was working in Kaung Son store in Aung Thukha quarter, Ye Town, the perpetrator and a 25-year-old friend of his came to the store and asked the store owner to take her to Ye Hospital where the perpetrator’s mother is getting treatment. So the victim followed the perpetrator and his friend by motorbike to the Ye Hospital.” Read more

NMSP claims their land use application aims to halt land grabs by investment companies, but locals see it differently

HURFOM: The New Mon State Party (NMSP) has been applying for permission to use land in the Parlain Region of Andin village tract, Kun Khari Island, and Man Gyi, Dani Dagyar, and Kaw Hlyne villages in southern Ye Township. Nai Win Hla, head of the Home Affairs Department of the NMSP, claims that the NMSP’s application for land use is aimed at halting land grabs by investment companies who want to exploit local natural resources. A new, unknown armed group has emerged in southern Ye, extorts and leaves locals in fear

HURFOM: On July 6^th 2018, locals told HURFOM that an unknown armed group has been active in southern Ye Township, Mon State. Local villagers have been extremely cautious about travelling to and working their farms and plantations, which has had negative consequences for daily livelihood needs.

According to a local monk, the unknown armed group has been active between Ka Log and Ham Gam villages of the Mount Kyaik Mote Lot region in Southern Ye for the past three months, and they have been extorting money from local farmers. Read more

NMSP’s land application has locals worried about development agenda

HURFOM: The New Mon State Party (NMSP) has applied to local authorities for permission to use land near Andin and Hnit Karote villages, Andin village track, Ye Township, Mon State. Local villagers are worried about the possible connections to investment projects.

“The local villagers didn’t know that the NMSP had applied to use the land. We don’t know when they made the application. We found out via the Village Farmland Management Committee only after clerks from the Land Record Department came to do a survey. We’re worried that the NMSP will hand over the land to an investment company. The NMSP has connections with investment companies and it’s a cause of worry for the locals,” said Mi Dar Dar, a member of Andin Youth Group. Read more

“We Still Want Our Land Back”: HURFOM interview with victims of land confiscation

HURFOM: On July 1^st 2018, HURFOM met with two victims of land confiscation, Nai Lin Aung and Mi Aye Mi San, a couple from Wae Rat village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State. Their land was confiscated by Burma Army Artillery Battalion No. 315 in 2004.

“The plot we bought for our house was about 40×60 ft. It was located between Wae Rat and Wae Gali villages [of Thanbyuzayat Township]. We bought it in 2004. Six months after we bought it, Artillery Battalion No. 315 confiscated it. Read more
