4-year-old girl raped in southern Ye

On March 22, a 4-year-old girl was raped in Kabyar Wa village, located in Khaw Zar Sub-Township in southern Ye, Mon State.

According to a neighbor, the girl was playing in front of her house at around 7 p.m., when a 14-year-old boy approached her and led her down to a nearby beach, where he raped her in an abandoned boat. Read more

Paung Township mining companies come under fire from local residents

Locals in Paung Township have complained that mining companies have caused serious damage to their local environment, health and traditional livelihoods.

A host of companies are active in Kadaik and Inn Praung village tracts, mining materials to be used for paving roads across the country. Companies involved in Paung Township include Cho Myittar, Ngwe Aw Zar, Unit Bae Lu, Ta Yone In Baryar, No.2 Road Stone Production, Shwe Taung Darna Htan Dee, and the Hightea and Prisons Department Company. Second Mon Women’s Conference held in Moulmein

Last weekend Mon State’s capital Moulmein was host to the second Mon Women’s Conference.

The two-day event, running from March 19-20, was organised by the Mon Women’s Network, a consortium of various organisations from Mon State and the Thai-Burma border, including Jee-Pya, Saytanar, Mon Youth Progressive Organization (MYPO), Mon Youth Educator Organization (MYEO), Border Health Initiative (BHI), and Mon Women’s Organization (MWO).  Read more

Last week Mon CBOs in Moulmein organised consultation sessions in 12 locations in Mon State and elsewhere, to support the second Mon Women’s Conference.

Teenager kidnapped and raped in Mudon Township

HURFOM: On March 5 a 13-year-old girl was abducted and raped in Mon State’s Mudon Township.

The victim, Mi H–, is a schoolgirl currently studying at a Basic Education Middle School. Read more

Two villagers shot and killed by military captain

HURFOM: On March 9 a captain from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 280 shot and killed two villagers in Magyi Chaung Wa village, located in Mon State’s Khaw Zar Sub-Township, in Southern Ye Township. Read more

Plantation owners cut down rubber trees as prices continue to drop

On March 8, 2016, 200 participants gathered in Moulmein to celebrate International Women’s Day.

40-year-old woman murdered in Three Pagoda Pass
