HURFOM: The junta’s security gate on the Mudon – Three Pagoda Pass Road, Mudon Township, Mon State has been extorting between 100,000 to 200,000 MMK from travelers who do not hold the Mon State (10/) ID cards.

There are lots of travelers who are not from Mon State. They have to pay more money. Those who do not hold Mon State ID cards are extorted from 100,000 to 150,000 MMK when passing through the junta’s gate. Security has really tightened. We must all have ID cards, recommendation letters and other identity documents to pass the gate,” said a traveler.

A huge number of travelers who attempt to enter Thailand or Malaysia without proper documentation use this road daily.

The tightened security is leading drivers to use other alternative routes to Mudon Township.

Because the security check is really tough along the Ah Bit (Mudon) Road, we now use the Khun Na Khway Road. There are fewer security gates on this road. But each traveler still has to pay at least 50,000 MMK,” said a driver from Three Pagoda Pass.

The junta has banned imports of Thai products via the Thai – Burma border and has been arresting individuals involved in illegal trading. The junta has also deployed many troops along the roads leading to the Three Pagoda Pass, Thai – Burma border.
