Rape case involving a minor proceeding slowly

March 3, 2020

HURFOM: A 12 year old girl from Chaung Zone Township, Mon State was raped by a 33-year old man on the 13th of  February 2020. The culprit was detained at the Police Office by order of the Chaung Zone court the next day.

The culprit was known to the girl’s parents.  He asked their permission to take her to a farm for a spiritual retreat.

The girl’s mother explained, “(He) often called and brought her so (I) believed nothing bad was going to happen. According to my daughter, he was drinking in a shop near the farm. She was asked to wait outside. Then he took her to the farm by motorbike where she was raped.”

A local woman was passing by and noticed something was wrong, which gave the minor a chance to bite her attacker’s arm and run away.

The girl was taken to the Hospital in Chaung Zone Township where the rape was medically confirmed, however there has been a delay in moving forward with the charges at  the local police station.

According to Daw Khin Lay Than from the Women and Child rights care group of Chaung Zone.

“(The police) said they need the real name of the girl’s father. (The girl) is living with her step-father. Also the police claim they need the medical paperwork from the hospital confirming the rape. Because the  relevant authorities and officers are currently in Nay Pyi Daw, we will open this case this month.”

“The case has not been brought to the courts yet. The girl gave her testimony at the Department of Social Welfare and to the Children’s Court. I will be satisfied if this is handled according to the rule of law”, said the girl’s mother.
