NMSP arrested 27 drug users

March 9, 2015

On March 3, 2015 the New Mon State Party (NMSP) and the Mon National Liberation Army (MNLA) worked in coordination to arrest 27 drug users at the junction of A-Vit Village and Ka-Law Tagon Dai Village, Mudon Township, Mon State.

???????????????????????????????Regarding the arrest, MNSP Mudon Township Chairman Nai Raja stated, “We’ve already obtained the information [about the drug users]. The youth, passing Ta Nom Pa Nout Check-Point, used the road from the entrance of A-Vit Village to Ka-Law Tagon Dai Village to buy drugs. The civilians have already informed us that they [the youth] are always using drugs during festive occasions. The full-moon day of Phoragon (March) is the moment when they celebrated the annual festival of their native pagoda. Therefore, they [the youth] were gathering together and their unusual activity drew our attention.”

“Our Township Office, cooperating with the sub-battalion (of the local MNLA), were waiting at the Ta Nom Pa Nout Check-Point,” continued the Chairman, “We didn’t search them on the way they went [to buy the drugs]. On their way back, we stopped them and performed a urine test. The urine test shows everything about drug use. We’ve already prepared two trucks but we arrested too many drug users, one group after another. The two trucks were full of arrested drug users and we had to send them to our office. During one day, we arrested more than 20 drug users, and on March 5th we arrested another three drug users. In total, we arrested 27 drug users.”

Officer Nai Raja continued that all 27 youths were arrested only for drug use, with some having experience of drug use for one to two years, others new to drug use, and others allegedly buying drugs for their friends.

“The users said that they had bought drugs from a village near Ka-Law Tagon Dai Village. That village is a Karen village, and the drugs are openly and abundantly available in the village. Even knowing about the situation, in order to avoid ethnic conflict, we haven’t gone there to arrest the drug dealers; we are just monitoring the situation. The [NMSP/MNLA] coordination team have been performing their duty at the Ta Nom Pa Nout Check-Point, and we have to continue our anti-drug operation,” stated the officer.

Currently, drug use has become a popular trend amongst Mon youths, with few young people aware of the dangers of drug use.

According to Officer Nai Raja, the arrested drug users will be sent to the Moulmein District Command of the NMSP, and the party will make a judgment in accordance with the drug laws.
